THE MIDAS TOUCH - HOW TO DECORATE WITH METALLICS HIGHLIGHTS IN 2017

Lauren Graham

Glamour, sophistication, visual interest, what's not to love about metallic highlights around the home? It's a trend we've seen building for some time now with metals like copper and brass taking centre stage in home decor, mostly in the way of accessories and clever highlights.

The good news is that the trend is here to stay in 2017 with even more options than ever before. Think mix 'n match metals, tonnes of texture and finer finishes that can create a look that extends past traditional old-world glamour and right into contemporary, modern interiors.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK

The rules for decorating with metallics have changed, in fact they've changed drastically.

Mixing metallic finishes is no longer considered a serious design faux pas, so get mixing and matching to create a look that's packed with tone and texture.

Modern metallics pair well with natural fibers, neutral colours and faux furs - the combination of natural textures and neutral colours creates a paired-down base, allowing the metallic highlights to really "shine". This look is all about making your metallics pop and not overloading a space with too much glitz.

TOP TIP: Remember to not just mix metals, but mix finishes too. Combining polished metals with hammered, brushed, or matte metallics helps achieve balance and harmony within a space.

SOME INSPIRATION

We've put together some inspiration on how to create this look in your home using some of our favourite metallic fabrics and wallpapers:

Designed to ensure each design catches the eye from every angle, new collection Asteria is the go-to range when it comes to stylish metallic highlights. Sumptuous burnished velvets, embellished faux silks and glossy geometrics are supported by gleaming textured plains in a suite of radiant colourways, as depicted above.

A subtle shimmering sheer might be just the metallic accent needed to elevate a simple look. We love this look paired down with french-inspired furniture items in raw wood and this industrial chair to create a modern look and feel. Collection Shadows has multiple shimmering sheer options to add a subtle metallic highlight that's light 'n breezy.

The design philosophy that one should stick to a single metallic is old news. Gold, silver and bronze hues can work together when combined with natural tones and textures such as wood floors and leather accents. The metallic highlights of wallpaper collection Elements combine beautifully with a golden highlight from velvet collection Velour, alongside a silver metallic table and brass lamp.

We are nothing short of obsessed with the bedroom in this image. It's simple, serene and stylish yet it touches on every major trend right now. The metallic wallpaper adds a hint of luxury whilst being perfectly paired down with a neutral colour palette and linen-look headboard. The tropical print and pop of greenery also touch on another major trend for 2017 - tropical-inspired prints. Bottom line - this is exactly how you should be bringing metallic highlights into your home in 2017!

Mixing the right materials will instantly create a luxurious space whilst still maintaining a contemporary appeal. As pictured above, we've combined ash oak flooring with a rustic porcelain accent bowl. Mixing these natural materials with the weather-worn textures and subtle metallic highlights of wallpaper collection Elements and design "Florentine Dusk" from fabric collection Cosmopolitan pulls together the ultimate in modern sophistication and glamour.
