While most of us as individuals swear solemnly that we aren’t slaves to trends, whether we’re in the business or just passionate about beautifying our own spaces, we all love to keep an eye on what’s going to be hot. At the very least, so we can make up our own minds about these things. This year’s trend forecast is a gathering of insights from all our sources, including an away session at the Heimtextil exhibition, plus a dash of our own expertise. As a sidebar, Heimtextil’s trend forecast goes much deeper than merely predicting florals over plaids for next season. It looks into our shifts in consciousness, our desires and needs, and how those will impact the kinds of spaces we want to live in and interact with.
TREND 1: SEEK SANCTUARY
LIfe’s tough, we all know it. So increasingly we’re looking to our spaces to provide sanctuary. Hopefully you’ll make these wi-fi free zones, but either way, look to soft, billowing sheers, calming neutrals and layers of plains on plains.

TREND 2: EMBRACE INDULGENCE
Now we’re not talking the Palace of Versailles here, rather, embracing indulgence has a contemporary spin with a rich colour palette, plush fabrics and, if you can stretch to it, one or two key original pieces in the decor. This trend is a big nod to craftsmanship and the sense of comfort and security of “the good old days”.

Children interact with their world intuitively and this trend is all about going back to our intuitions. Don’t over-think it, is one way of putting it. Bold primary colours and geometric patterns are the key elements here. But above all, have fun and shake loose from the automated world we live in.

TREND 4: GO OFF GRID
Don’t you just wish for a day when your phone didn’t ring, or you weren’t compelled to look at your Facebook and Instagram newsfeeds every few minutes? Our desire to embrace nature is also about our need to disconnect. So bring the outdoors in, welcome in the wonderful array of verdant botanical fabrics that will continue to dominate through the year and create little pockets of nature. Pair these fabrics with natural wood and stone surfaces and light-loving indoor plants.

TREND 5: ESCAPE REALITY
We’re all on a search for Utopia and probably the place we’d most like to find it is in our homes. Think shimmering fabrics, metallic threads and optical illusions to get a sense of this trend.
