ALL EYES ON HEIMTEXTIL TRENDS FOR 2020

Guest User

Every year textile manufacturers, designers, creatives and trend watchers gather in Frankfurt for a glimpse into the crystal ball of the future. Heimtextil is biggest textile and decor trends expo. But it goes much deeper than what prints and weaves are going to be popular; the exhibition really delves into where we are as humans, our lifestyles and our conscious needs and unconscious desires. This year’s theme was entitled “Where I Belong” and focused on identities, with the premise that we are complex and layered beings with layered identities. In this modern and tech-centered world we form our identities through our experiences that take place simultaneously online and offline, locally and globally. This, in turn, informs the spaces we want to create around us to resonate with our identities and give us a sense belonging.

These layers are expressed in five exciting trends which are sure to inspire designers the world over: Max Glam; Pure Spiritual; Active Urban; Heritage Lux and Multi-local. Read on to discover more about each trend and how you can recreate them using our fabrics.

1. MAX GLAM

This trend turns the glamorous life tech-savvy. It incorporates layered theatrical influences and glamorous showtime aesthetic with crafted and digitally-rendered elements. Max Glam is expressive, eccentric and surreal, without room for minimalism, standardisation or commodification. It’s what we would call OTT (over the top). Textiles include data-inspired patterns, dynamic surface effects and 3D decoration. With this trend you can joyfully mash-up glam, gradients and spectrums, fake fur, pile and fringes, jacquard and fantastic prints, metal gloss, fluorescence, phosphorescence and iridescence. It’s artificial, fantastic and decadent. Colours in this trend are a riot of clashes and rebellion; they’re assertive and loud, saturated and vivid. You might never have mixed persimmon orange, bright mint, rose red, deep purple, fluorescent pink and deep turquoise... but now you can.

2. PURE SPIRITUAL

This trend finds balance in nature and mysticism. It reflects our search for calmness, seclusion and a deeper connection found in meditation and mindfulness, contemplation and decluttering. A pure aesthetic is emerging, stripped back and essential. Technology is embraced to do good while shifting between realism and mysticism. Knowing the environment is at a critical stage due to human impact we are more focused on the natural world. Here we’re addressing a renewed bond with nature, and so organic matter, raw materials and pure textiles are selected, which show nature's traces, organic structures and irregularities. Look to pure textiles derived from the botanical world such as jute, pine bark and paper, which are light and flexible, as well as real and bio-based faux leather and textiles with a soft sheen. This trend’s shades are created from the earth and cultured by man: deep green references seaweed, kelp and algae, while mould and mycelium inspire an acid green, including a series of neutrals representing dry to moist earth.

3. URBAN ACTIVE

This trend values utilitarian, adaptable solutions and acknowledges that the digital future is now. It creates an urban environment, prioritising performance and utility, creating functional, versatile and adaptable interiors. Tech performance is valued while making smart use of available and renewable resources. Functionality is prioritised, leading to a focus on technical textiles and performance-led design, while looking cool and working well remains key. There’s a big focus here on recycled, remade and reduced consumption. Expect to incorporate modular and flexible furniture solutions, upholstered with performance textiles and functional features. Style influences are derived from music, fashion and lifestyle brands, which means colours are bold, nearing primaries, while materials are monochromatic, mono-material and minimalist. With slick surfacing and fluid curves, interiors are made to look like they're constantly in motion. This trend is a fun mash-up of textures combined with overly padded and quilted qualities and laser-cut foamy textures for enhanced comfort and human touch. The Urban Active palette is bold, robust and utilitarian referencing work wear and active sportswear: uniform blue, asphalt grey, caterpillar yellow, black, cotton canvas and sunflower yellow.

4. MULTI-LOCAL

Embracing global cultural influences this trend celebrates inclusivity by honouring traditional craftsmanship, embracing exchange, creative integrity and diverse identities. Global design is no longer led by the West. Instead, there are strong design influences coming from Asia, the Middle East and African countries, where cultural heritage is cherished and layered with global references. It’s a celebration of crafted and decorative pattern, from tribal and folkloric to geometric and abstract. Combining jacquards, fringing, embroidery and beading as well as raw, two-tone patterns and fringe made using raffia, cotton and cane. Bold, indigenous pile knot rugs and carpet weaves show pronounced weaves and organic looking surfaces. Heritage prints such as batik and ikat are blended with printed floral velours, jacquard knits and gobelin weaves. Consequently textile colours become part of a wider cultural narrative, linked to local community, cultural heritage and private identity and resulting in a hot and spicy palette of pumpkin, red pepper, mustard, and honey with aqua, navy and pink to cool down.

5. HERITAGE LUX

Celebrating rich, historical legacies and embracing global heritage with an increasing desire for the magical, this trend’s nostalgia brings comfort in turbulent times. Historic architectural styles are being mixed with contemporary elements, preserving the historic details and juxtaposing them with modern furnishings. With an appreciation for historical treasures comes an interest in the mysterious and magical aspects of history. Traditional luxury is being reinterpreted with an opulent, magical edge. History-laden textiles are sumptuous, spanning baroque brocades, and elaborate damasks. Lustrous surfaces feature heavy ornamentation and organic ripples. Fabrics of surreal luxury show free-flowing and sensuous silky velour alongside fluid, drapeable pile materials and lush liquid-gloss surfaces. Organic grainy surfaces and traced jacquards reference talismanic crystals and stones of ancient history. Colours also reflect on ancient history and include blood red, dark rust, sensuous sapphire, lustrous mother-of-pearl, tobacco, truffle and cork.
